Haeream Vallem has the mood of a valley in late summer afternoon light: the handmade paper maps eroded terrain in soft greys and muted purples, ancient rock worn smooth, and at the lower center warm ochre pools with the light of a ripe wheat field before harvest, the moment when the sun is so full that yellow and white become the same color. The valley is caught in transition, between one light and the next, the paper's physical topography doing the work that pigment alone could not.

The valley is caught in transition, between one light and the next, the paper's physical topography doing the work that pigment alone could not.
In Haeream Vallem the gravitational logic of the pigment being piloted by the compositional architecture of the sculpted paper reaches its most legible form: colors settled into the valleys, pooling in the folds, concentrating in the crevices. The spatial reading shifting between a view from above and a view from within, topographic map and enclosed landscape simultaneously. The paper is both terrain and witness.
The Latin title carries its resonances without translation: haeram holds associations of enchantment, of a place held under a spell, time suspended. A generative landscape translated into paper topography through the Charta research, what the work earns is not pastoral ease but suspension: a place held outside ordinary time, the solitude structural rather than projected.
Haeream Vallem belongs to the Charta series, works on handmade paper begun in 2009 that form the generative core of Ruggero Vanni's three-dimensional research. In the Charta works, the paper is cast and sculpted before any pigment arrives: structure precedes color, and the topography of the surface is the composition.
